There’s Something About That Laundromat…

A new laundromat has opened up in South Bronx and this one is a bit different then most. It’s named Dios Restaura, which translates to God Restores which proclaims just how faithful the owners are. Everywhere you look, you’ll find something about God. According to the manager, “At all times we have to give glory to Him. No matter where.”

There are religious items everywhere, from the bible laying on the table to the little sign that says “Stop and Praise God.” The manager believes that the best way to preach is by example and there’s no doubt he isn’t leading in that area.

So now you might be asking me, “What does this have to do with salsa dancing?” Well, this building is famous in the Bronx for the ways of it’s new owners but it used to be famous for something else too. You guessed it. Salsa!

Club Cubano Interamericano was a social club that was once a legendary dance hall that helped put Salsa and Mambo on the map. The club got it’s start in 1945 from people of Afro-Cuban descent who emigrated to the Bronx and it just took off from there. With people so highly known in the Salsa scene such as Arsenio Rodriquez and Ray Barretto to Benny Bonilla and the Palmieri brothers living nearby, there was no reason for it not to.

Sadly the club closed sometime in the 90’s but the legend will never die. And a new legend has now filled it’s space. I wouldn’t mind getting my clothes laundered in a place of such history.
