Learn Salsa Rhythm and Impress Your Partners
Learn:
- Salsa Compositions
- Clave Rythym
- The Break Step
- The Basic Salsa Step Cycle
- Styling Techniques
Salsa rhythm is a little complex, but you’ll learn to understand it with enough practice. All Salsa compositions are based around the Clave rhythm, which is the type of instrument that provides the core groove that you’ll follow.
Salsa is written in 4/4 time, but is danced at a faster tempo, which you’ll learn to be the “quick-quick-slow” rhythm. It may help you to remember it better as “step-step-hold.” That “hold” is called a “break step.”
There are three steps to each 4 beat measure and the “break step” or weight transfer will occur on one of the beats. This will vary once you learn more advanced steps and is different with every dancer.
The basic Salsa dance step cycle will contain 6 break steps within 8 beats and will then start over again. After you’ve learned more advanced techniques, this step cycle will be modified significantly, with turns, cross-body leads and much more.
After getting the hang of the rhythm, you’ll become more comfortable with including styling techniques into your dance. This will really get you noticed on the dance floor. Learning all of the leg and arm movements, hip movements, spins, rolls and hand styles will spice up your dancing techniques.
